For this year's Girls Night Out in downtown Placerville, Friday Feb. 25, we have special plans at the Bookery!
Four women from our local chapter of the American Sewing Guild will set up a big display of beautiful handmade items and they will be available to answer your questions about sewing and all kinds of handicrafts including knitting, crochet, quilting, applique and felting.
Nancy and Heather paid a visit to Carmen Barbour, a very crafty and charming member of the Sewing Guild, to learn more about the sorts of projects they tackle. There are several different neighborhood groups who take on all kinds of different projects...so there is always something new to learn for participants!
For example, the group called "Sew Threads of Love" makes charitable contributions to community.
They make pillowcases for displaced children to fill with their own personal items when removed from home.
The children then get to keep the pillowcase as a gift from a loving community.
They even make heart-shaped breast warmers for breast cancer survivors.
Other groups such as "Sew Scrappy" and "Sew Elegant" take on more personal projects such as these adorable hats.
Check out this gorgeous felted handbag.
Or this gorgeous and vivid quilted and appliqued banner for sweethearts.
Carmen's work includes intricately detailed embroidery on handsewn jackets.
Carmen in an expert knitter and learning all kinds of cool tricks:
And even this darling rustic wall hanging that brings a lot of the different techniques together to create a cozy camping scene.
And finally, Carmen recently felted this little replica of her own precious Scotty dog.
The Sewing Guild has access to such a great big world of fun and creativity!
And lucky for us at the Bookery and our crafty customers,
they will be sharing their knowledge and expertise at our bookstore (where we have plenty of books on sewing and crafting to supplement your knowledge)
for Girls Night Out, Friday February 25 from 6 - 9 p.m.
Come join the fun!
Great combination--The Bookery and the American Sewing Guild! Two of my Placerville favorites.
ReplyDeleteThere are definately treasures at The Bookery, and not only those that work there! Add our Gold C0untry chapter of ASG and you have a winning combination! ~tecla

ReplyDeleteLike Deb, ASG & the Bookery are two of my favorite things! I seem to always find something I need at either the Bookery or at a sewing guild meeting or event. Non members are are always welcome to attend events with well known presenters from the sewing world and to attend a few meetings to see which groups suit them. Attend a few or a bunch. There is so much to learn and share with these talented ladies. All skill levels are welcome. www.goldcountryasg.org
