Quilt Crazy - Books, Quilts and Theater

The whole town's gone quiltin' crazy!

Along with many other Main Street merchants, we here at the Bookery are proudly displaying quilts, books about quilting, pioneer women, and the westward journey, in honor of Quilters, the new play produced by Imagination Theater and El Dorado Arts Council, and directed by Chrissie Addison.

It's the perfect time of year to get cozy and go to a play full of intensity, drama and song in a warm theater on a snowy or rainy afternoon!

Especially when it centers around the age old activity of quilting, in the shelter of a group of pioneer women...
...a timeless, engaging, and thoughtful story.
Read about it here in the local paper.

And meanwhile, come check out our marvelous quilting books.
So many cool projects that you can do at home during these stormy spring days!

Or just looking for some fascinating reading material?
We have diaries and accounts of women's journeys westward.

We encourage all our customers to go see this wonderful production!

The American Sewing Guild Coming to the Bookery

For this year's Girls Night Out in downtown Placerville, Friday Feb. 25, we have special plans at the Bookery!

Four women from our local chapter of the American Sewing Guild will set up a big display of beautiful handmade items and they will be available to answer your questions about sewing and all kinds of handicrafts including knitting, crochet, quilting, applique and felting.

Nancy and Heather paid a visit to Carmen Barbour, a very crafty and charming member of the Sewing Guild, to learn more about the sorts of projects they tackle. There are several different neighborhood groups who take on all kinds of different projects...so there is always something new to learn for participants!

For example, the group called "Sew Threads of Love" makes charitable contributions to community.
They make pillowcases for displaced children to fill with their own personal items when removed from home.
The children then get to keep the pillowcase as a gift from a loving community.

They even make heart-shaped breast warmers for breast cancer survivors.

Other groups such as "Sew Scrappy" and "Sew Elegant" take on more personal projects such as these adorable hats.

Check out this gorgeous felted handbag.

Or this gorgeous and vivid quilted and appliqued banner for sweethearts.

Carmen's work includes intricately detailed embroidery on handsewn jackets.

Carmen in an expert knitter and learning all kinds of cool tricks:

And even this darling rustic wall hanging that brings a lot of the different techniques together to create a cozy camping scene.

And finally, Carmen recently felted this little replica of her own precious Scotty dog.

The Sewing Guild has access to such a great big world of fun and creativity!
And lucky for us at the Bookery and our crafty customers,
they will be sharing their knowledge and expertise at our bookstore (where we have plenty of books on sewing and crafting to supplement your knowledge)
for Girls Night Out, Friday February 25 from 6 - 9 p.m.
Come join the fun!

Farewell to Our Sweet Jackie

We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved bookstore dog and owner Nancy's constant companion, Jackie, passed away on Saturday after battling lymphoma.

Customers may remember her resting in the quality paperback literature section,
or sometimes taking a spot in the middle of the aisle, thus earning the occasional nickname "Speed Bump."
She loved all people and was especially fond of treats.
Every afternoon at three o'clock on the dot she and Nancy would go out for a walk and make the rounds of the neighborhood.
Here is Jackie with Celia and Nancy watching the Christmas parade go by in front of the Bookery.

And some older photos from friends of joyful, loveable Jackie:

Thank you to all our customers for always being so friendly with Jackie.
She had a very happy life as a bookstore dog!

And we will dearly miss her.
