Pioneer Women and the Journey West

We here at the Bookery are thrilled to have recently gotten in a whole slew of gorgeous books on pioneer women and women's stories of the westward trail.

These books cover fascinating topics of the Old West, from medicine to cookery.
They would make fabulous gifts for the ladies in your life who are interested in history and women's stories.

Each book is in perfect condition, and many contain beautiful old photographs of women living in the west in the 1800s, pioneering and trying to make the best of their rough situations.

So many fascinating stories! From Texas to Nevada to Utah to right here in the Mother Lode of California:

We love these books because often they allow the untold stories of countless courageous women to finally be told and appreciated.

Check out this feisty lady!

Do yourself the favor of looking into these books of adventure and inspiration.
And remember to stuff one into the Christmas stocking of a lucky lady you love!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

Here at the Bookery we collect Christmas books all year long to bring out in December.
In front of our store we have a table, boxes and shelves laden with wonderful holidays books just waiting to spread their cheer.

On Sunday December 5th we were right smack-dab in the middle of the action for Placerville's annual holiday parade.

Nancy, Celia, and Jackie enjoy the view:

We took delight in all the characters of this year's parade, including the cheerful animals:

So many wonderful and joyous participants:

The grand combination of El Dorado, Ponderosa, and Union Mine's marching bands playing Christmas tunes gave us goosebumps:

Our own Bookery lady, Sharon, made sure to greet Smokey the Bear!

We were excited to see the El Dorado Book Mobile,

especially because we donated many of the books that they handed out for free to the children in the crowd!

Even after the rain started, these merry little dancers warmed our hearts:

Merry Christmas from Placerville's Santa and his helpers:

Don't forget to take a stroll around downtown Placerville and enjoy all the lights this year:

As well as the special Christmas trees that light up our highway corridor.
The Bookery decorates one of those trees!

Please enjoy our festive Main Street during the holidays this year.
And don't forget to stop and pick up some books for your loved ones at Chistmastime!

Thanksgiving Message from Nancy and Celia

It is the time of year for all of us to seriously think about what we are thankful for, so on behalf of Celia and myself, and at the risk of sounding like I am accepting my Emmy, I would like to thank all of our customers (both locals and the once-or-twice-a-year regulars) for their loyalty, support, and their love of books. We would like to thank our scouts for helping us to supply our customers with great books, while having the "fun of the hunt." We'd like to thank authors everywhere, past and present, for giving us education, instructions, laughs, tears, and entertainment. Last but not least, we would like to thank our amazing staff. They work hard to clean, organize (or fluff as we call it), be knowledgable about the books, and help customers find what they are looking for with a smile and a friendly attitude. And they do all this for flexible hours, a little money, and our undying gratitude. The word of the week - GRATITUDE.

We won't be here on Thursday (one of the three days a year we are closed) as we will be feasting with our families and friends. We hope that you will be doing the same and that we'll see you on Friday with our Christmas books, tree lighting ceremony, fun and refreshments.
-Nancy and Celia

Collectible Art and Western Americana Art Books

You all know we have a lot of wonderful art books, but did you know we also have collectible art books?  These books are rare and out of print, often very difficult to find anywhere else, and they would make very special Christmas gifts for the artist or art collector.

Check out this gorgeous 21-print portfolio of Toulouse-Lautrec's circus paintings:

Or we have this wonderful rare book of California lithography from 1935:

Or check out this two-volume set of the amazing artwork of Chinese calligrapher and painter, Tung Ch'i-ch'ang:

We have a unique fold out book of Andy Warhol's portraits and landscapes:

Books like this full of beautiful old paintings that tell stories of bygone eras:

And we also have an extensive collection of Western Americana art books, including monographs of the greats, both Russell and Remington.
...and all kinds of fascinating books of western and cowboy art and prints.

Including this spectacular book devoted to the works of female artists in the west from 1890 to 1945.

Don't miss out on this glimpse into the inspiring and sublime world of art. Western Art is located on the top shelf of the art section, and if you would like to see any of our collectible books please inquire at the front desk.

Also, don't forget to "like" us on facebook and let us know there if you have questions or comments!
